Borobudur temple was founded arround the year 800 AD by Buddhist Wahayana. In the history of Borobudur Temple, there are some theories that explain the origin of the name Borobudur Temple. One of the theories states that the name of Borobudur Temple cames from word Sambharabudhara which "sambhara" means mountains and "bhudara" mean mountain where the slopes are located terraces.
In addition there are some other folk etimology. For example the words borobudur comes from word "the buddha" is due to shift the sound to Borobudur. Another explanation is that the name is derived from two words "bara" and "beduhur". The word bara said to have originated from the word monastery, while there are also other explanations where the bara comes from Sanskrit which means temple or monastery complex and beduhur meaning is "high", or to remind the Balinese language means "above". So the point is a monastery or hostel located on high ground.
Historian J.G. de Casparis in his dissertation for a doctorate in 1950 found that Borobudur is a place of worship. Based on the inscriptions Karangtengah and Kahulunan, Casparis estimate Borobudur is the founder of the dynasty king of Mataram dynasty named Samaratungga, doing construction around 824 AD.
Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the 9th century. According to the inscription Kayumwungan, revealed that Borobudur was completed on 26 May 824, almost 100 years since its initial construction. It is said that the name of Borobudur means a mountain having terraces or also called budhara. But others say that Borobudur means monastery on the high place.
Some experts said that the position of the Borobudur Temple is located at an altitude of 235 meters above sea level. This is based on studies of the geologists who are able to prove that Borobudur at the time was a large lake area so most of the villages located around Borobudur Temple were at the same height, including Pawon Temple and Mendut Temple.
Based on the inscription dated 842 AD, a historian Casparis stated that Borobudur is one of the places to pray. Where in prasasi contains the word "Kawulan i Bhumi Sambhara" meaning purity and Bhumi Sambara origin the name of a corner at the Borobudur Temple. Each floor at Borobudur contains a different theme because at each level represents the stages of human life. This is in according with the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism that anyone who wants to reach the level of perfection as the Buddha had to through every level of life. On each floor there is a relief at Borobudur Temple - relief which, when read by coherently will take us around the Borobudur temple clockwise.
